Scott Zimmer currently lives in Kingston, NY, working in ceramics, paintings, and the garden. He is a third generation artist who first learned about art’s ability to affect people from his musician father who introduced music therapy to NJ public school systems in the 70s. His mother worked as a magazine editor and Consumer Advocate at Hackensack Hospital, and also encouraged her son’s creative development.
Zimmer spent his formative years going to concerts and museums in NYC, which inspired him to enroll in a summer program at RISD where his artistic explorations exploded. He continued his education completing his Bachelor studies in Architecture at Pratt, New York City, and upon graduation worked within NYC restoration firms working on Macy’s Herald Square, the Empire State Building, and New York City Hall. Looking to push conceptual boundaries and for a more creative way to work intuitively with his hands, he pursued a Masters in Fine art in Ceramics at SUNY, New Paltz. Post graduation he participated in numerous residencies including: Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts, Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, Worcester Center for Crafts, eventually working at Kohler Art Industry Program as a Ceramic Factory liaison for four years.
Zimmer has also always loved gardening, which greatly informs his studio practice. After studies at the New York Botanical Garden and purchasing a Victorian cottage in Kingston in 2003, he found the freedom needed to immerse himself in another passion, designing and installing gardens. With time and care, this hobby became an integral part of his professional studio practice. In 2012 Zimmer accepted a position as lead garden designer in the Hudson Valley, and launched Zimmer Gardens in 2013 as a full time business. Zimmer Gardens is now considered one of Hudson Valley’s more creative garden businesses.
